Jericoacoara

On the northeast coast of Brazil, the village of Jericoacoara is situated almost on the equator. Jericoacoara is located approximately 300km from Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara State, which hosts an international airport serviced by flights from all over the world. Thanks to an article published in the Washington Post in 1994 describing the village as "one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, Jericoacoara has gained popularity. The amazing weather conditions, the beauty of the bay, the massive dunes and the freshwater lagoons that surround the fishing village makes an outstanding site, which has become one of the favorite place for practicing various water sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing and / or surfing.

History

Several legends exist to explain the origin of the name Jericoacoara. The most likely relates that in Tupi-Guarani (the language spoken by Indians in the region), the words "Yuruco" (hole) and "Cuar" (turtles) refer to the fact that the turtles came to lay and bury their eggs in the sand.

In 1984, the village of Jericoacoara and the reserve that surrounds it were classified as "environmental protected area" by federal law. In 2002, the site rose to the status of "National Park", the highest level of protection of the environment in Brazil. Since, it has been forbidden to build in areas not provided for this purpose, draw roads, pollute or harm the environment.

Jericoacoara - The Village

Few things have changed since the time Jericoacoara was a fishing village. The access tracks in the sand and the absence of concrete road give to the town a unique atmosphere. Upon his arrival, the traveler understands very quickly that here is a easy going place.
